THE STORY OF MIKOŁAJKI

Here, where today Mikołajki is located, in the oldest, Old Prussian times, there was a settlement, the inhabitants of which were engaged in fishing, weaving, felling and floating trees. The first note about Mikołajki appeared in the pages of history in 1444. It was then that the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Konrad von Erlichshausen, granted the noble Wawrzyniec Prussia the lands located next to the church village of Mikołajki. Its name comes from St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the chapel situated on the windmill hill.

NAME OF MIKOŁAJKI

St. According to legends, Mikołaj was the guardian of sailors and water passages. His name was permanently inscribed in the name of a modest Masurian village, and from 1726 - a city that is still called Mikołajki. The name of the village changed, but it kept the name of its patron in various versions (St. Nicolas, Nicolaus, Nicelsdorf, Niclausdorf, Nikolaiken). When Mikołajki was mentioned for the first time in old documents, the village covered the area of today's Evangelical Church, the area of today's 3 Maja Street and the Market Square (Wolności Square). On the other side of the lake there was the village of Kozłowo, and communication between it and Mikołajki was maintained by means of a boat. It was not until 1516 that the first wooden bridge connected the two shores of the lake. This bridge was erected in the place where today a footbridge is suspended on a high pylon.
